Painting the J-Class in the Solent

With the monumentous return of the J-class to British waters, with regattas in Falmouth and the Solent, it was the obvious step for me to attend and to try and get reference to compose a painting to depict this triumphant occasion.

This piece is the first to be painted by me from either of the J-Class regattas in England this year.  It is of the end of Friday's race of the Solent regatta. Velsheda is leading Rainbow, with Lionheart and Ranger battling it out at the back of the field.

Overcast conditions meant a lack of clarity and vibrancy in the reference material until the last few minutes of the race when a hole appeared in the cloud and lit up the fleet spectacularly!  With a lively sea state, the four J's beautifully lit and a mass of flotilla boats creating a haze of spray, I am hoping that my portrayal of this scene can replicate, what for me was one of the highlights of the regatta and a completely stunning sight to witness!

This artwork 'Return of the J-Class - Solent 2012' has been given the honour of the front cover for Christies auction catalogues for their autumn sale which took place on 21st November.  Subsequently, this painting fetched a new record for one of my artworks.  To see more information about the painting go to   To see progression shots of this artwork, click this link.
