Cornwall · Oil Paint · The Nuances of Light
"From a council estate at Bissom to the light and moods of home."
Where it began
I grew up at Bissom, a lovely little council estate between Penryn and Mylor & Flushing. Having the countryside on my doorstep led to an appreciation and love of nature from an early age. My parents instilled their knowledge of local wildlife and I spent much time exploring.
This was the start of my fascination and understanding of light, and the endless effects it can play on subject matter.
I've always been drawn towards three main subjects with my work.
The classics and the great regattas - a lifelong love of anything gaff rigged.
The local nature my parents introduced me to, and a lifetime of exploring it.
The coastline and Cornish seascapes I've always painted - and now my focus.
A natural step
I've always painted the coastline and Cornish seascapes, and had a strong portfolio of this work already - but when Covid affected regattas and the maritime auctions, I took the natural step of concentrating on my Cornish scenic work.
The ease of Covid meant more dog walks, and that produced a heap of wonderful reference material. There is ALWAYS something to photograph! No matter how dull it may be, there's always a chance of a nice surprise when you get a break in the cloud and a wonderful lighting effect creates a one-off, often dramatic scene. I always have the camera with me - I've had too many times when I'd ruled things out and regretted it.
Home & belonging
"I don't think there can be a community in the world more passionate about their homeland - whether it be our scenery, our sport, our pasties, or indeed anything Cornish."
Cornwall is an incredibly special place - not just for its infinite amount of stunning views, but because it's home, and belonging to something special. Being part of a community that appreciates the beauty on our doorstep, and considers ourselves lucky to be living in a beautiful part of the world. It's a friendly place, and it's great seeing others appreciate it as you do, realising how lucky they are to witness the views they see on a daily basis.
My true passion
I get immense pleasure from replicating the scenes we see everywhere in Cornwall - all the varying vistas and moods that our stunning county provides on an infinite scale. When you look at my portfolio it's evident I'm drawn towards the effect of light, the atmosphere it creates and the feelings it evokes.
The aim is to create a painting that makes you feel like you're standing there witnessing the scene - a special reminder of your favourite walk or view.
My time on scenic paintings is split four ways.
Bespoke paintings of your favourite walks and views, created to order.
Original paintings released for sale through my social media channels.
Shown each year at the Mall Galleries, London.
Fowey River Gallery & Lighthouse Gallery, Penzance.
Please follow my social media pages to see work in progress, finished paintings as they're completed, new print releases, offers and exhibition news - the newsletters can be a little infrequent due to a busy schedule.
Limited-edition prints
I sell a huge range of limited-edition Cornish Seascape prints through this website and at outlets across Cornwall - including Fowey River Gallery, Norway Inn, Trebah Gardens, Bedruthan Hotel, Pizza Express Falmouth and The Old Quay Inn in Devoran, among many others.
We use a brilliant local company for our printing - Sharkfin Media in Truro - using the highest quality Juno Matt Textured Fine Art Paper and Canon LUCIA inks, ensuring colour vibrancy, black levels and fade resistance are all first class.
To do justice to the beauty which has inspired people forever - and which keeps bringing back those not lucky enough to live here, year after year.
I'm fascinated by the nuances of light, from minute to minute - affected by the time of day, weather conditions, seasons and tides. Together these create an infinite possibility of scenes and moods, all of which can be pleasing to the viewer. Cornwall's beauty is unquestionably stunning; if I can replicate it, my job is almost done.
